Song - The Christmas Waltz
Artist - Sammy Cahn and Jule Styne

I have not done any where near enough Christmas songs this year! This is one I have really been wanting to do though. I'm trying to do some better videos, this is one is using our Sony camera instead of just my iphone, the sound is great and the picture is clear, a little too clear! Looks like I need to wear makeup to record songs!
Only a few more days till Christmas, let's see if I can get a few more songs in!

#325 - Pretty Boy Floyd (Then and Now)
Song - Pretty Boy Floyd
Artist - Woody Guthrie
Today is a pretty special ukudaily for me. When I was 12 I was in a production with my dad called "A Tribute to Woody Guthrie". While I had done plenty of theater by that time, it was like any production I had ever been in. Joseph, the director, had taken the time to find really amazing pieces of writing and music by Woody Guthrie. He arranged them all together to describe a side of Woody Guthrie I think only the hard core fans knew about. I was the youngest member of the cast, but he really made a place for me and helped me to feel very included in the production. One of the ways he did this was by giving me a piece to sing called Pretty Boy Floyd. My dad played the viola, bringing a perfect sense of sadness to the song while I charged my way through the 12 versus. At times it was terrifying, knowing that it was all on me to keep all those versus in my head, but it was an amazing challenge and changed me as a musician and a performer. After one performance a kind elderly woman said, "who was the young lady with the voice like Ethel Merman?" That comment was a real boost for me! I knew my voice wasn't conventionally pretty, but Ethel Merman had a functional and extremely powerful voice and that was good enough for me.
Joseph gave me this memory with my dad and a few weeks ago he offered to send me the dvds of the performance. I am so happy to get to view this experience in all it's awkward glory. So much awkward hair tucking and feet shuffling, I'm sure I'm doing everything I can not to pass out or barf and it shows, but hey I got through it. Here it is enjoy, and feel free to laugh!!
I thought I would give it another try 17 years later. I don't know all the words by heart anymore, but it's a hell of a lot less awkward!

Better late than never! Here is my annual post for my husband on his birthday (two days ago).
His birthday is also marks the beginning of this blog, a project I started two years ago on the 23rd. I have loved working on this idea even though my posts have become more scarce. It has really forced me to focus on music in a way I never have before. It has allowed to play music with my family and friends and create some really wonderful arrangements. I look forward to it growing and changing, becoming less of a uku-daily and more uku-when-the-creative- energies-are-in-full-force! I am very excited to be writing more of my own arrangements: Brandon and I plan to record them soon!
Thank you for all of your support and kind words during this process! I appreciate the feedback so many of you have given me and the encouragement to keep going with this idea!

Song - Annie's Song
Artist - John Denver
Chord Source - http://www.guitaretab.com/j/john-denver/202858.html (capo on 2nd fret)
Whenever I hang out with my dad he mentions about 50 songs that I would love to do for this blog and then instantly forget about and try to spend the rest of the month remembering. This was a song that I could not believe I hadn't done yet. My dad sang this to my mom on her wedding day and I'm not sure a better love song has ever been written. He suggested that I give it a try at this tempo and I absolutely adore it.
Here is another very interesting cover of it for you Weezer fans out there!

#309 - Forsaken Lover
Song - Forsaken Lover
Artist - Woody Guthrie (as far as I know?)
This is another song we did from the Woody Guthrie tribute I was in with my dad when I was a kid. It's still one of my favorites from that show and I'm surprised it hasn't made it's way into this blog yet! I couldn't find chords for it, so I had to wing it. I couldn't find anyone else covering so the tune is just from memory, I'm hoping I got it right!

#300 - Sheetrock Waltz
Song - Sheetrock Waltz
Artist - My father!
I have had this instrument for way too long and I have to admit that I haven't given it the attention it deserve. My dad built this beautiful hammer dulcimer when I was a little kid and played it for many years. He has since upgraded dulcimers and this one was passed on to me last summer. I had every intention to play it, but it has so many string and is so intimidating. So it has sat in the corner looking beautiful until I told myself to get over it and just give it a try.
I tried a few songs but nothing was really clicking. I'm so used to looking at chords and having something to guide me I found I was getting frustrated. Then I thought to try this song: Sheetrock Waltz. In addition to this dulcimer, my dad also built most of our house. He wrote this song while building my room and adding some skylights and yes, hanging sheetrock. It has since been one my very favorites, and as it turns the only song I can even get close to playing on the dulcimer at this point.
Now that I have a little bit confidence in the dulcimer, I hope to keep playing with it.

#294- No Alarms and No Surprises
Song - No Alarms and No Surprises
Artist - Radiohead
Chords Source - http://www.alligatorboogaloo.com/uke/tabs/031205.html
The new year for me means challenging myself musically. This year I really want to push myself and become a better artist. I plan to do this by stepping outside my comfort zones, and for this gal that means strumming patterns! I don't know if you have noticed, but I'm pretty locked into a strumming pattern (hint: if you can sing "I'm Yours" to it, I'm probably doing it). So while this song is not as polished as I would like it to be I want to show you that I'm trying to do new things. It might not be easy, but I sure am going to try!
Happy new year to you!
