#282 - Ain't She Sweet/5 Foot Medly

I first heard this version of these songs by Christopher John Phillips on a ukulele Facebook group.  He really does an amazing job with it, super impressed by the second round!  These have to be two of my favorite songs to play on the ukulele, what a great idea to string them together!

Here is his original version:

Repost from Ukulelehunt.com

Well said!

Ukulele Mythbusting

I might not have thirty years of special effects experience, but I still want to tackle a few myths and misconceptions I see crop up now and again.

There’s only one way to play each chord

The chords you see in chord books and at the top of sheet music are only one way of playing them. There are many other ways you can play them (known as inversions).

Uke chords are made up of three or four notes and any combination of those notes will give you the chord. You can play the notes higher up the neck. Or you can switch the string you play them on. It’s still the same chord.

For example, a C7 chord has the notes C, E, G, Bb. So you could play it 0001 (G-C-E-Bb) or 3433 (Bb-E-G-C).

There are good reasons to play a different inversion of a chord:

- It fits better with the chords around it.
- You’re playing with other ukulelists and want to stretch out the sound.
- You want to give it extra emphasis by playing higher up (or lower down) than the other chords in the sequence.
- It’s easier to play. Which brings us to.

Fmaj7 is impossible to play

I don’t know who decreed that all chord books would list Fmaj7 as 2413 but there are two possibilities:

1) They were so impossibly good at ukulele they forgot mortals can’t twist their fingers into a shodow puppet of Hogwarts.
2) They’ve never played an Fmaj7 on a ukulele in their life.
The vastly easier way of playing it is 5500. But you can usually get away with playing it exactly the same way as Am 2000.

Chord charts are “tabs”.

This one is infuriating to me. Not because I’m a grumpy pedant (although I definitely am). But because you want to know what you’re going to get. If the there’s no distinction it makes it harder to find what you’re looking for.
You have to play things the way they’re tabbed
It’s best to see tabs as suggestions. You can always play the same note on a different string, change a chord inversion, use a different strumming pattern. Or change things completely, call it an original composition and hope no one notices.

There’s a ukulele on I’m Yours

There no ukulele on Jason Mraz’s released version of I’m Yours (or any version I’ve ever heard by him for that matter).
The chugging instrument goes as low as the F# on the bottom E string of a guitar. Much too low even for a baritone ukulele.
The higher instrument is much closer to standard ukulele range (he’d only have to tune down a semitone to fit it on). But it sounds a lot like an electric, steel-strung instrument to me. There aren’t many steel-strung electric ukuleles around, even fewer in 2008. Seems very unlikely.
The entire world seems to be against me on this one. So if you have any evidence either way let me know.

Three Things I’ve Got Wrong

Of course, I’ve spread a few myths of my own. So, in the spirit of the meme that’s been knocking around the UK politblogs, here’s just three of them.
1. You can never have too many ukuleles
I was fully in the grip of UAS. Coming up with any excuse I could think of to buy another uke. But I finally hit rock bottom when I wasted far too much money on this ridiculous monstrosity.
Despite a huge collection of ukuleles, I only play two or three regularly. The rest collect dust. And now I wish I had fewer ukuleles.
2. You should start on a soprano
I’ve never been quite sure of the best advice to give when asked what size ukulele they should start with. So I went with soprano since that’s what most people mean when they think of a ukulele.
When I started, it took a lot of stumbling around before I settled on which ukes I preferred for which purposes. And I don’t really think there’s any shortcutting that process. So now I’d say try a few out if you can. Otherwise just buy whichever size takes your fancy. It’s not a big deal which you start out on. So long as it’s not a baritone.
3. I didn’t give Hawaiian culture enough repect
While I don’t agree with the, “Hipsters playing the ukulele is horrible cultural appropriation,” thing, I do think we should keep in mind we owe the instrument’s popularity to Hawaiians and should show them and their culture respect.
I wouldn’t tab Ukulele Lady now for that reason. It’s a song that turns Hawaiians into a caricature and reduces the language to nonsense.
And I’m going to try to combine points 3 and 1 by only buy ukuleles made in Hawaii from now on. I’m not sure if I’m capable of sticking to that though.

#273 - This Land is Your Land

Song - This Land is Your Land
Artist - Woody Guthrie

I totally forgot to post this last week! I hung out with the family last week and Carrie invited me along to sing with her class. When we were getting ready to record this, Carrie told them to sing nice and loud for the video, and boy did they!

Here is a bonus video of Lucy hating some apple sauce I made, but being very polite about it.

If you have been to karaoke with me you would know that I have done this song to death, it's my go to every time. I feel like I have tried it on the uke a million times but I just couldn't get the chords quite right, so I'm pretty pumped with how this turned out (secret time, it took me about 10 tries to get this right!)

#266 - Grow old with you

Song - Grow old with you
Artist - Adam Sandler
Ah man! I totally missed my blogs birthday! Anyway, this means I have been at this just over a year and that's pretty neat! I'm not really that close to having had a song every single day, but I don't think that 266 videos is all that bad either. I'm not sure the direction this blog will take from here. It's becoming apparent that I don't really have the time to do one every single day, so maybe I'll shoot for a couple a week. I would also like to start doing more collaborations and originals. Another thing I would love to see on this blog would be contributions from other folks, ukulele or otherwise as long as you're inspired!

I did this song for Felix's birthday last year and even though his b day was a few days ago, I don't think it's too late for a song :)

#265 - What'll I do

Song - What'll I do
Artist - Irving Berlin
Chord Source - http://www.theguitarguy.com/whatllid.htm

I am a huge fan of "This American Life". We would catch on the weekends sometimes when I was a kid, but as soon as I got my first ipod, their episodes were the first thing I put on it. As nerdy as it is for me to admit, I listen to it while I run. If I have my earbuds in you can guess I'm listening to This American Life!

Last week one of my favorite contributes to the show, David Rakoff, passed away. I don't usually put a lot of thought into the death of celebrates, they weren't someone I knew and while I feel for their families it is not something I dwell on. But I am saddened by the death of David Rakoff. He had a unique and interesting writing style and approach to the world. Even his voice was interesting and when he had a story on TAL you knew it was going to be good.

I listened to the tribute show to him today and they played this song at the end. Here is my own little tribute to the great David Rakoff.

#264 - Call Me Maybe

Song - Call Me Maybe
Artist - Carly Rae Jepsen
Chord Source - http://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/c/carly_rae_jepsen/call_me_maybe_ver7_crd.htm

It's been a while so I figured I would go for it and do the poppiest song I could think of! I actually haven't heard this song but a few times, so it was fun to do.

So where the heck have you been Hanna? I'll tell ya! I got a new job and I absolutely love it. I'm working at the Oregon Humane Society now and it is an absolute blast. I honestly enjoy what I'm doing and feel like I'm really giving back to my community. The hours and days are new and different but it all feels worth it because I enjoy getting up and going to work in the morning. I'll find how the uke fits into this new schedule, but for now I'm trying to figure out how my little family still has time for me while we adjust.

In other words, stay tuned and I'll be back with more regularity in the upcoming months!

#263 - Never Grow Old

Song - Never Grow Old

Artist - James Moore

I'll say it before and I'll say it again, I'm a huge sucker for gospel songs. This song holds particular meaning to me because it is sung in the play "Quliters", one of my favorite plays I did with my dad as a kid.

#252 - Little Star

Song - Little Star
Artist - Stina Nordenstam
Chord source - http://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/s/stina_nordenstam/little_star_crd.htm

Today was the first time I cried while trying to record a song. I have known our neighbors and good friend Aumie and Shauna as long as I have known Brandon (my husband). They have two of the sweetest cats in the world (even though Morpheus likes to bite sometimes). Romeo is a dear, kind and gentle cat who snuggles and loves like no cat I have ever met. His love for Aumie and Shauna is deep and obvious though he will shower visitors with affection as well. A few months back the found out that Romeo had cancer, which they quickly removed through a surgery. Throughout his treatment and recovery, Romeo remained his sweet affectionate self, never once deviating from his pleasant nature. Last month, the cancer came back and since has grown steadily but without much harm to Romeo's daily life.
This morning my sweet friend received the sad news that these would be his last days. My heart is breaking for them, but I know there is nothing I or they can do for him at this point. I feel helpless that I can't ease there pain or Romoe's. Feeding them and singing sweet songs is all I can hope to do right now.
I couldn't find many songs with the name Romeo in them that weren't super cheesy, so I landed on this one from the Romeo and Juliet soundtrack.

Romeo will always community's little star. He was loved by all and will be greatly missed.

Song - Button Up Your Overcoat
Artist - Henderson, DeSylva, Brown

#250 - Beer

Song - Beer
Artist - Reel Big Fish
Chord Source - http://ukudaily.blogspot.com/2012/07/249-take-your-love-with-me.html

This was a blast to play with my dad, my brother and John! We worked on a lot of different songs but settled on this one. I hope to do more!

#249 - Take Your Love With Me

Song - Take Your Love With Me
Artist - Sophie Madeleine
Chord Source - http://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/s/sophie_madeleine/take_your_love_with_me_crd.htm

This is a song that my Dad and I have come to love playing together. It works well as a duet and I really like the guitar in there too. What fun it is to play together!

#248 - The "Brownsmead" Birthday Song

Song- The "Brownsmead" Birthday Song
Artist - Traditional / Melody "Mary Widow Waltz" by Franz Lehar
Chord source - I can't find the chords for this song ANYWHERE so if you have a source please share!
It's my brother's birthday on Tuesday so we sang this for him at the Urban Cafe in Astoria. Love you big brother!

Also I have to put "brownsmead" in quotations because some people that have heard this song through brownsmead folk only were very disappointing to hear that we didn't write it!

#247 - I Just Can't Stop Myself

Song - I Just Can't Stop Myself
Artist - Sophie Madeleine
Chord source - http://ukulelehunt.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/StopMyself.pdf

I really can't get enough of Sophie Madelein, she is just amazing. This is probably the easiest song of hers to learn on uke, usually there are some pretty insane chords in there but this one is relatively tame in comparison to something like "The Rhythm You Started."
Up until the last verse, this is pretty much what songwriting feels like to me. Sometimes I think maybe I'm too darn happy to write anything meaningful! Who wants to hear another song about great my husband is or that I have great friends? I feel like that will get old real quick! Poor me, I don't have anything sad to write about haha!

Loving Kate Micucci's solo stuff! For those of you who don't know, she is one half of the band Garfunkle and Oats (http://www.garfunkelandoates.com/), and they are hilarious!! They recently played at a live recording of The Savage Love cast, it was pretty much all of my favorite things in one place. Check them out and take a peek at her solo work too!

Song - The Sunny side of the Street
Artist - Jimmy McHugh and lyrics by Dorothy Fields
Chord Source - http://www.heartwoodguitar.com/chords/dan-zanes-on-the-sunny-side-of-the-street/ (I changed the bridge from a G to a G7 and the C to an Em)
I had a great day with my dad hanging out and looking around for a new guitar for him. Nothing is quite like getting a new instrument, even if it is for someone else. After a day of mulling over whether or not to get a new concert guitar, he went back across down and bought one before heading back to the coast. While we were trying out instruments, he pulled out this song and it's been stuck in my head all day. Thanks pop!

#238 - Lonesome Valley

Song - Lonesome Valley
Artist - A. P. Carter
Chord source - http://www.classic-country-song-lyrics.com/lonesomevalleylyricschords.html

At this point I'm just going through the "O Brother Where Art Thou?" sound track to see which songs I haven't done yet. I think it was last year that marked the 10 year anniversary of it's release. My first job in a coffee shop was shortly after it came out and for a while it was the only CD that we had. Naturally, I hated it after the billionth time I heard but when we took it out of rotation I started loving it again. That soundtrack has been a great resource while doing this blog. A lot of the songs are some version of a traditional that sends me down the rabbit hole of interesting traditional music that I might not have discovered otherwise.

Song - Enjoy Yourself (It's Later Than You Think)
Artist - Carl Sigman & Herb Magidson
Today is a twofer since I slacked so much! House (the show I love most in the world) ended last month, but we were so busy we didn't catch up on it until a few days a go. This song played during the final credits and I loved it!

#233 - My Heart Belongs to You

Song - My Heart Belongs to You
Artist - Me!
I'm back!! This break from the blog has been much longer that I anticipated but I am so excited to get back to work on it!
So where have I been you ask? Oh you know, just getting married and going on a honeymoon and stuff! The wedding was absolutely wonderful. The ceremony was short, sweet and perfect followed by a rockin' party that lasted till almost 2 in the morning. We were so lucky to be surrounded by a great mix of friends and family, the love in the room was almost overwhelming. I have none of the complaints that I normally hear from brides: I feel like I talked to almost everyone, I ate plenty of food (big thanks to Carrie for making sure we did that) and I got to dance all night, what could be better!
I wrote this song for Brandon pretty last minute. I was originally going to sing a Death Cab song with the girls but as we got closer to the wedding it just didn't feel right. The song was modeled after our vows. Like I said, our ceremony was super short (I think someone said it was 7 minutes long!) but we did say our own vows, which was scarier than I thought it would be. We said 3 phrases starting each with, "I love, I accept, and I promise." They were a great way for us to voice our commitments to each other while acknowledging our history together.
So the plan was for me to sing this song by myself, but as luck would have it I ended up getting pretty sick on the day of the wedding; I had no voice at all! So I got a little bit of help from everyone on the chorus when I sang it at the reception. My voice was totally squeaky and silly, but I wouldn't have had it any other way, it was just one more thing that made the wedding special.
Here are a few photos from the wedding! Lots more to come! So after the wedding, my body decided it was time to really get sick, not just play around like it was before. I had no voice at all for a few days and a terrible cough that wouldn't quit. Luckily my jobs were really understanding and gave me a few days to recover before we left for Mexico, did I mention we were going to Mexico? Cause yeah, it was awesome!
We flew out just a week after the wedding, which was great, it gave us time to recover and me to feel a little bit better though my cough was still pretty bad on the plane. We spent the first few days at a quiet resort just relaxing and enjoying each others company. Then we switched resorts to meet up with some friends, which was also a ton of fun! We hit the town! We went zip lining and snorkeling! Even with a few people getting sick and some injuries a great time was had by everyone!
Here are a few pictures from the honeymoon! The last day we were in Mexico I decided I wanted to venture into the surf one last time; bad plan. A wave caught me at my waist flipping me onto my shoulder and I heard a loud crack! While nothing appears to be broken, my shoulder has been in some pretty serious pain all week, which is why it has taken me so long to get back to the ukulele!!
The wedding, the honeymoon; all of this has been a wonderful experience. I am so lucky to have Brandon and I look forward to our long happy lives together. If you are reading this, chances are I know you in the real world and you are a part of our lives. Thank you for following my silly blog and being a part of our journey together.

#232 - The Rhythm of Love

Song - The Rhythm of Love
Artist - Plain White Ts

Today, Teresa and I FINALLY did a song together, something we had been talking about doing since this summer. I look up to her so much as a musician and I feel I have so much to learn from her. It was an absolute honor to have the opportunity to sing with her. Hopefully this is the first of many collaborations! Happy birthday Darren!

Someone to Watch Over Me

Song - Someone to Watch Over Me Artist - George Gershwin Man, this song is hard! I'm still not sure I got it right!

Sorry!

I apologize for the patchiness of blog posts lately, but I'm letting myself off the hook for the next couple weeks. I'm getting married next week y'all! The last minute details are coming together but that leaves me little time for much else! I'll be sure to post lots of photos from the wedding to make up for it.

Sunday, May 6, 2012

#227 - You Don't Have To Say You Love Me

Song - You Don't Have To Say You Love Me Artist - Dusty Springfield Sorry Bruce, I thought this song was more uplifting, but I guess it's just horribly depressing. The tune is sweet thought!

#226 - It's Been the Worst Day Since Yesterday

Song - It's Been the Worst Day Since Yesterday Artist - Flogging Molly It's actually been quite a good day, I just like this song :)

Thursday, May 3, 2012

#225 - Whatever Lola Wants

Song - Whatever Lola Wants Artist - Richard Adler & Jerry Ross I love Damn Yankees (surprise surprise, Hanna likes a musical) and I think this song is probably one of the best known numbers in the show. Last year, my buddy Jake and I did a performance to this song and it was a blast, here are a few pics!

#224 - What a Wonderful World

Song - What a Wonderful World Artist - Sam Cook This song gets stuck in my head ALL THE TIME!

Tuesday, May 1, 2012

#223 - The Rhythm You Started

Song - The Rhythm You Started Artist - Sophie Madeleine I sure do love a good Sophie Madeleine song. The way she writes music is so unique and wonderful. She might be a robot or an alien is so darn cute and perfect!

#219 - We Are Going to be Friends

Song - We Are Going to be Friends Artist - White Stripes I took some liberties with it, but it was fun!

#218 - You and I

Song - You and I Artist - Ingrid Michealson My friend Sarah was kind enough to take me to this show, and it was just fantastic! I had so much fun and felt so inspired when the show was over, thank you Sarah! Here is my second attempt at this song, I went for the falsetto!

#215 - I'm Sensitive

Song - I'm Sensitive
Artist - Jewel

Ok, I seem to be on a real 90/00s kick this weekend, I'm not sure what's bringing up all the nostalgia, but it sure has been fun!
I love this song and I think I have even used the line "I'm sensitive and I'd like to stay that way" in an argument before. But it's true! I am a really sensitive person and I actually kind of like that about myself. If you love me, that's just a part of me you gotta deal with!

#214 - Dammit

Song - Dammit
Artist - Blink 182

I recently watched the movie "The Other F-word" which was super adorable and featured a bunch of musicians my brother and I used to listen to who are now fathers. One of the dads in the movie was Mark Hoppus from Blink 182 which reminded me that I have yet to do a song by them! A lot of my embarrassing taste in music has come forward because of this project, so let's just pile on Blink 182, I loved them and saw them in concert many times. There I said it. My name is Hanna and I love crappy pop punk.
That feels much better.

#212 - Tom Dooley

Song - Tom Dooley
Artist - Traditional

A fantastic choice by Billy!

#211 - Nothing Better

Song - Nothing Better
Artist - The Postal Service

I love doing songs with Billy! You can't see it in these videos, but he is playing my old Mahala and doing a fantastic job. I will convert everyone to the ukulele...

#210 - Swing

Song - Swing
Artist - The All American Rejects

I got the iphone 4s today! So that means videos coming at you in HD, but it also means I need to refigure how to frame my videos! So yeah, I need to work on that :)

Sunday, April 8, 2012

#208 - Wig In a Box

Song - Wig in a Box
Artist - Stephen Trask

If you know me you know that I love musicals. Come to karaoke with me and you'll see what I mean. I may not have the pipes to actually sing most of the songs I attempt but damn they are fun. The problem is that a lot of musicals are hard to find tabs for and if I can find them they tend to be really difficult. I know this version isn't perfect, but I love this song and I did the best I could!

#207 - Colours

Song - Colours
Artist - Donovan

A pretty little Saturday morning tune for you on this sunny day!

Thursday, April 5, 2012

#206 - My Heart Will Go On

Song - My Heart Will Go On
Artist - Celine Dion

I remember going to see Titanic, I think I must have been in middle school, and actually being afraid I was going to cry. People made it seem like there would be uncontrollable sobbing coming from the entire theater, and at that age anything you do in public is embarrassing. What if I snort while I'm crying? What if I have a huge snot bubble come out of my nose? These are the thoughts of a middle schooler. Mostly I think I just had to pee really bad by the end and was hoping the damn thing would sink already.

#202 - Under the Boardwalk

Song - Under the Boardwalk
Artist - The Drifters

The shortage of videos this weekend was because I was out of town at bachelorette party! It was an absolute blast and my uncle was kind enough to let us use his beach house. My girls put together the best, relaxing weekend! Thanks uncle Bruce, this one is for you!

Thursday, March 29, 2012

#201 - Forevermore

Song - Forevermore
Artist - Kaite Herzig

My friend Andrea just posted this song on facebook and I thought it was adorable! My brother played in basketball when I was a kid and we would often go to day long tournaments and watch him. To keep me entertained my mom would play handslap games with me and this is one we got really good at!

Wednesday, March 28, 2012

#200 - Penny's Song

Song - Penny's Song
Artist - Joss Wheden

Sort of anticlimactic for my 200th song, but I was in a Dr Horrible kind of mood! Not in a horrible mood that is, just in the mood for Dr Horrible.

Monday, March 26, 2012

#199 - Shaving Cream

Song - Shaving Cream
Artist - Benny Bell

Heard this song for the first time at that workshop a few weeks ago, so silly and fun!

Sunday, March 25, 2012

#198 - Oh Comely

Song - Oh Comely
Artist - Neutral Milk Hotel

I have been trying to do this song since Emily and I did a Neutral Milk Hotel song last month. While it's not hard to play, it has definitely been the most vocally challenging song I have done on this blog. His voice is so unique it's hard to even attempt some songs, but I gave this one a shot, hopefully it isn't too bad!

Saturday, March 24, 2012

#197 - Flagpole Sitta

Song - Flagpole Sitta
Artist - Harvey Danger

I now have complete respect for anyone who attempts this at karaoke, those lyrics are HARD!

# 196 - Hear You Me

Song - Hear You Me
Artist - Jimmy Eat World

Here is some high school music for you!

#195 - Tonight You Belong to Me

Song - Tonight you Belong to Me
Artist - Billy Rose

Sometimes when I go out to see my folks my dad will let me play a few songs with him at the restaurants he plays music for in town. I usually feel like I really need to hold back on my voice because the space is small and I don't want to annoy people, but that means you can barely hear us in the video! Also, I need to reign in the theatre face something wicked!

Wednesday, March 21, 2012

#194 - Crazy

Song - Crazy
Artist - Willie Nelson

Sorry if I've already done this one! I know I did Gnarls Barkley "Crazy", but I don't think I've done this one before. Almost to 200! Any requests for song 200?

Sunday, March 18, 2012

#191 - Hot N Cold

Song - Hot N Cold
Artist - Katy Perry

A little teeny bopper music for ya?

Also, I had a super fun weekend, how bout you?

Saturday, March 17, 2012

#190 - Ain't She Sweet

Song - Ain't She Sweet
Artist - Milton Ager

I graduated from college yesterday, more like I just finished up with my classes. No diploma till June and I won't be walking in the ceremony and that's not till June either. I was kind of bummed about the way the anticlimactic way my college career ended, but hey I finished something I started and really is something to be proud of!

As a graduation gift my sweet fiance got me this new ukulele which I absolutely love. He has been so supportive and wonderful throughout our relationship, but definitely since I have been in school. He was always there to listen when I was a crank about a teacher or a project that was due. He would remind me why I started when things got hard and would cheer me on when I did well. He is a tremendous partner and I am so lucky to have him.

But onto the uke! I have been on the look out for an upgrade on my soprano uke, as the little Mahalo is great but leaves something to be desired on tone. This thing is amazing. It's a Kala pacific walnut body and super light with just the best ring to it. I know I have done this song before, but I just really wanted to showcase the sound on the uke, as I think it is just divine!

#189 - Till There Was You

Song - Till There Was You
Artist - Meredith Willson

Yeah, I was in the Music Man as a kid, only played Amaryllis, no big deal.

Tuesday, March 13, 2012

#188 - Sweet Pea

Song - Sweet Pea
Artist - Amos Lee

I took a class today from Lil Rev at Apple Music and it was really inspiring. I need to work on my strumming patterns a lot! I feel like I have a pretty good grasp on chords progressions, but I really need to work on what to do with my right hand. Thanks Lil Rev!

Here is a short video of him demoing some things he taught us, I really want to get those triplets down!

#187 - Good Old Mountain Dew

Song - Good Old Mountain Dew
Artist - Bascom Lamar Lunsford

Maybe this was written before Mountain Dew could melt mice carcasses.

Saturday, March 10, 2012

#186 - Pumped Up Kicks

Song - Pumped Up Kicks
Artist - Foster the People

Here is another one of those songs that EVERY ONE with a ukulele has done. I still, however, refuse to do I'm Yours or Somewhere Over the Rainbow/Wonderful World.

Friday, March 9, 2012

#185 - Science Fiction/Double Feature

Song - Science Fiction/Double Feature
Artist - Richard O'Brien

I'm no science fiction buff by any means so I really understood a few of the references in this song...
...until the magic of wikipedia told me the rest!! Now I can impress all of my Rocky Horror friends!
Check it out, it's actually pretty interesting!

#184 - New Soul

Song - New Soul
Artist - Yael Naïm

Apparently I'm bad at saying "lalala" over and over. Who knew!?

Wednesday, March 7, 2012

#183 - The Cat Came Back

Song - The Cat Came Back
Artist - Harry S. Miller

Ok, I know I say this a lot, but this really might be my new favorite song to play. I love a chord progression that makes me sound like I know what I'm doing.

On a different note, why is this a kids song? That's messed up! I love though that there are 1000000 versus and no matter what source you look at they are a little bit different. People write new topical ones now and then, I think it's great. Let's brainstorm all the horrible ways we can kill a cat!

Tuesday, March 6, 2012

#182 - Ghost Riders in the Sky

Song - Ghost Riders in the Sky
Artist - Stan Jones

This song holds a dear place in my heart because it reminds me a being a kid and listening to the radio show "Ghost Riders in the Sky". That show meant staying up a little later, listening to silly radio dramas, and good music. When you don't watch much TV as a kid a radio show will do just fine!

Monday, March 5, 2012

#181 - The Universe Song

Song - The Universe Song
Artist - Monty Python

Wow, this song took me about a million times to get right and I still think I messed up my millions and billions a few times!

This goes out to my friend Leah, who I really think has the best perspective on our size, place and importance of the universe. She finds this to be a comfort where I think for most people it terrifies the deepest part of their being. I guess being small and unimportant doesn't have to be scary but rather empowering!

Sunday, March 4, 2012

#180 - Hallelujah

Song - Hallelujah
Artist - Leonard Cohen

As we draw close to reaching almost 200 videos I feel like I'm kind of losing steam on the this project. I really want to try to get to a year (or at least 365 videos) but I'm feel like I am losing momentum and drive. I want to continue for sure, but I may not be able to do a video every day until I feel like the creative juices are flowing again.

Sorry for the quality of this video, I'll be getting the new iphone soon, which is good, cause this one is on it's last legs. I also hope that the girls and I will do this song together soon so I'll repost that one when we do.

#178 - Love is a Battlefield

Song - Love is a Battlefield
Artist - Pat Benatar

I guess I can't really say love is a battlefield for me (personally) anymore cause I just booked my tickets for my honeymoon to Mexico! Ah yeah! Love is an all inclusive resort!

Tuesday, February 28, 2012

#177 - 12th Street Rag

#173 - I Will Always Love You

Song - I Will Always Love You (abridged version)
Artist - Dolly Parton

I love this song so much, sorry, not the Whitney version, the Dolly Parton version. I couldn't bring myself to do the talking part.

Thursday, February 23, 2012

#172 - 3 Rounds and a Sound

Song - 3 Rounds and a Sound
Artist - Blind Pilot

We love this song, but it was scary for us to do because Emma knows the guys from this band! Hopefully they don't curse us for ruining their song!

#171 - Can't Help Falling in Love

Song - Can't Help Falling in Love
Artist - Elvis Presley

This song never gets old, NEVER! Also, I'm surprised this is the first Elvis song I've done, looks like I need to get on that!

Tuesday, February 21, 2012

#170 - 9 to 5

Song - 9 to 5
Artist - Dolly Parton

The funny thing about this song is that after so many years of working evenings, weekends, attending school and work, or just having a wacky schedule in general I really hope I have a 9 to 5 job soon!

Monday, February 20, 2012

Maybe...

...if I had starting playing the ukulele at age 1 I could be this good by the time I'm 80.

#169 - If You're Gonna be Dumb You Gotta be Tough

Song - If You're Gonna be Dumb You Gotta be Tough
Artist - Roger Alan Wade

This one goes out to everyone who made Mini Bike Winter an absolute blast. I'm not very daring or adventurous, but man, my friends sure are and it is fun to watch. You guys are the best and I love you for the crazy shit you do.

Here are some pics I took over the weekend.

#166 - Inside of You

*WARNING - while today's video might not be explicit, it is a little dirty*

Song - Inside of You
Artist - Infant Sorrow

Why didn't I think to do this song yesterday?? So Valentine's day appropriate!

Tuesday, February 14, 2012

Valentines day post!

I really wanted to do "At Last" but I couldn't quite nail it, and if you can't nail that song there is no point in doing it. So here is the second cutest thing I could find. I have done this song before but I love the video for it and thought I should share it with y'all.

Hope you get to snuggle with your favorite today!

Artist - Snow Patrol

Today's song is for my good friend Shauna. Happy birthday!

Friday, February 10, 2012

#162 - This Love

Song - This Love
Artist - Maroon 5

Sorry for doing a Maroon 5, I have to say that some of their songs I really like. I'm sure that makes me lose a few points a musician or something, I care not! Also sorry that I didn't know how to end it so I just kind of stopped.

Thursday, February 9, 2012

#161 - If I Needed You

Song - If I Needed You
Artist - Townes Van Zandt

Big thanks to Larry for teaching us this one at the cabin!

Wednesday, February 8, 2012

No voice = no song!

Got just enough of a cold that my voice is kind of shot! I feel ok and tried to do a song, but my voice is pretty much gone, sorry!

Tuesday, February 7, 2012

#160 - Avocado

Song - Avocado (Desperado)
Artist - Weird Al Yankovic
Theme - Your favorite food

I apologize for doing a Weird Al song, but I REALLY wanted to do a song about avocados for my favorite food today and I really didn't want to sing a Jason Mraz song. Also I couldn't find the tab for his song.

Also I should never do videos without make up, HA!

Monday, February 6, 2012

#159 - Nine Million Bicycles

Song - Nine Million Bicycles
Artist - Katie Melua
Theme - A bicycle/velocipede

I wanted to work a different angle for the theme today. I don't think I have the chops to do "Bicycle Races" solo and I have already done "Brand New Key" so I had to look for something new to do for the bicycle theme. This was a song I found by searching "songs about bicycles" and I really like it!

#158 - Tonight You Belong to Me - Live!

Song - Tonight You Belong to Me
Artist - Billy Rose and Lee David

Here is the video from last night! I am super nervous so you can actually hear the kazoo wobble a little bit while I am trying to play it.

Here is the interview as well if you are interested. Also very awkward and nervous on my part but Alex Falcone was amazing. (there's a little shout out to you in there uncle Bruce!)

#157 - You Ain't Going Nowhere

Song - You Ain't Going Nowhere
Artist - Bob Dylan
Theme - A piece of furniture

I LOVE this song. Great to sing, fun to play, all around awesome. Sorry my head is chopped off in the video though, I'm not sure how that happened I record the same way EVERYDAY so you think I would have the hang of it by now.

Saturday, February 4, 2012

My first live appearance!

I just finished up being a guest on Late Night Action with with Alex Falcone at the Action Adventure Theater! I was terrified to do it but it was a blast! Felix was kind enough to film the interview and song so we will work on editing it and getting up by tomorrow.

#156 - Tip Toe Through the Tulips

Song - Tip Toe Through the Tulips
Artist - Al Dubin (lyrics) and Joe Burke (music)
Theme - A Flowering Plant

I have no idea what's happening on the bridge of this song, so I made it up :)

#155 - Baby Beluga

Song - Baby Beluga
Artist - Raffi

I thought I was going out on a limb to ask my sister in law Carrie if she would do a song with me on the blog (I realize not everyone is as big a ham as I am and would rather not be all over the internet singing). I was so excited that she not only wanted to do it, but offered up a Raffi song! How is it possible that I haven't done a Raffi song yet? Without discussing it we delegated my brother to play guitar and my Dad happened to stop by on his way home and hook up the bass so he could play along too. And voila! That's how you make a family band! Lucy helped too, I suppose.

Here'e a bonus video of Lucy being adorable.

This is actually yesterdays video but I was out visiting family and couldn't post it, sorry!

Wednesday, February 1, 2012

#154 - That's Not My Name

Song - That's Not My Name
Artist - The Ting Tings
Today's Theme - My Name

My friend Justa started a group with the intention of inspiring art every day. This is helpful to me as I already try to do this blog daily! I don't know if I'll sync up with the theme everyday, but I definitely will if I am stumped on an idea for a song.

Thanks for the inspiration Justa!

Song - Come Take a Ride in My Airship
Artist - George Evans and Ron Shields

A sweet song my dad taught me this weekend.

#150 - Alligator Man

Song - Alligator Man
Artist - Jimmy C. Newman

One of my favorite Larry songs for sure! I was so happy to finally get to play this with him. Lulu did a great job on the video because you really get the full view of the cabin and what everyone was up to. Thank you!

#149 - The Cabin Experience

Elisa and I have been wanting to do this song for a while and this is our fist stab at it. I am hesitant to label this video as the final version of the song because I know once we work on it it will be a lot better. This video was mostly to give you a taste of the fun we had this weekend on the mountain and what it's like to play with a ton of people, it's a blast!

Friday, January 27, 2012

Off to the mountain!

Howdy folks! I'm off to the Mt Hood today for a weekend fun time in the snow! No internet access for me, so you'll just have to do without for a few day. Never fear though! There will be so much music playing up there that I will be sure to have several new videos for you when I return!

Thursday, January 26, 2012

#148 - Baby One More Time

Wednesday, January 25, 2012

#147 - Recycled Air

Song - Recycled Air
Artist - The Postal Service

The Postal Service is becoming my default when I don't know what to sing. Unfortunately they don't have a ton of songs to choose from. Guess I'll just have to do them all at some point!

I think of this song every time I get on a plane...

Tuesday, January 24, 2012

#146 - Tall Buildings

Song - Tall Buildings

I'll admit that I hadn't heard this song until today, but I love it. It makes me happy I don't have a job that makes me miserable and I hope I never do.

Requested by my uncle Bruce, something to offset all the sad songs this week!

Saturday, January 21, 2012

#143 - Fake Plastic Trees

Song - Fake Plastic Trees
Artist - Radiohead

God damn the song is a bummer! If you ever are in a good mood but just want to be in really really bad one listen to this song, or better yet sing it a couple times. I guarantee the world will seem like a much darker place! I remember we were playing Lips (a singing game for the X Box) at a really fun cousins weekend and everyone was having a blast and dancing. Then two of us decided to try this song. I think a few people cried and then we all went to bed.

You've been warned!

#141 - Crazy

Song - Crazy
Artist - Gnarls Barkley

This is a song I've been wanting to do for a long time. I have a huge folder of bookmarks just dedicated to songs I want to do for the blog. I think this one has been in there since September, I'm really happy with how it turned out. I changed around some of the words, but that's just how I roll (also there were some new chords in there for me so half the time I'm looking at my hands.)

#140 - When I'm 64

Song - When I'm 64
Artist - The Beatles

This was my song for yesterday since it was my birthday and all!

Happy birthday me! One year closer to 64!

#139 - Take Your Love With Me

Song - Take Your Love With Me
Artist - Sophie Madeleine

Today's song was written by Sophie Madeleine who is an amazing musician and in part inspired me to do this blog. She did a great project where she did 30 covers in 30 days.

This song also reminds me a bit of my pop with the references to animals and being the reason I play the ukulele and all.

#138 - The Time Traveler

Song - The Time Traveler (That name is still under construction)
Artist - Us! (We still haven't come up with a band name, any suggestions?)

Our first original song, I'm so excited! I wrote it and then brought it to the group, which turned it into something really amazing. I'm so happy with the way it turned out.

Emma said it sounds like my dads song writing, I think that's sweet.

This song is for my Felix and our long happy future together.

#137 - Waltzing Matilda

Song - Waltzing Matilda
Artist - Bush Ballad (Wikis words, not mine!)

I think the only reason I am able to spit out all of the words to this song is that I sang in choir at some point in grade school. That stuff will stick right in the ol' noggin, I'm sure kicking out some other useful information.

#136 - Silhoettes

Song - Silhoettes
Artist - The Postal Service

My uncle totally busted me, I forgot to post this yesterday! I even recorded it the day before because I knew we were going on an adventure, but then I forgot to post it when we got home! Oops!

Anyway, here is what I was doing instead of playing the ukulele!

#135 - Sleeping In

Song - Sleeping In
Artist - The Postal Service

Sorry I do so many Postal Service songs, they just lend themselves really well to the ukulele. I also spent pretty much all of 2003 listening to them. Really, I don't think I listened to much else.

#134 - Between the Bars

Song - Between the Bars
Artist - Elliott Smith

I've been wanting to do this song forever, but haven't been able to find the right arrangement that suits a ukulele. So I just made it up! Hopefully it's not too bad!

#133 - Samson

While I wasn't raised with any particular religion in the house, some biblical stories did make it into my childhood (I think a lot of them were through sneaky cartoons my grandma showed me!) For some reason I was always drawn to the story of Samson and Delilah. I'm not sure if it was my budding feminism recognizing a strong women or what the reason, but it's one of the few stories I remember. I really like this song because it is written from the perspective of Delilah. While the tune is wandering and was really difficult to sing, I wanted to take a stab at this song mostly for the power in the lyrics.

Also, my hair seems to want to butt part all the time now, I guess it just knows that deep down I really am a hippy.

# 131- Across the Universe

Song - Across the Universe
Artist - The Beatles

I grew up with the Beatles and have always had the enormous respect for them that every person who plays an instrument or listens to music at all should have. Like them or not, you absolutely have to respect them. And maybe that's why it has taken me this long to do a Beatles song. I am intimidated by doing Beatles songs, but I will work on it and hopefully do more in the future.

I like to think I gave this version a little bit of ukulele flava' though.

#126 - Auld Lang Syne

Song - Auld Lang Syne
Artist - Robert Burns

When we were kids all the adults would go to their New Years party and we felt super grown up that we were given permission to stay up until midnight. This was huge for me. When Midnight hit, we all knew this song had something to do with the holiday, but absolutely none of the words. Does anyone really know the words? If you do would you mind explaining them to me? Anyway, this is they way we would sing it, and I'll probably sing it that way for the rest of my life.

Happy New Year!
